How to use Canon LBP3000 printer on a Mac, Snow Leopard

Because Canon does not provide sufficient documentation in English regarding the use of the printer Canon LBP3000 on Macs I felt it necessary to provide description to those non-Japanese speaking Mac users attempting to use the LBP3000, which is a decent laser beam printer after all. This is done on Snow Leopard but should basically work for Leopard and other LBP printers from Canon. Comment here if you need any info.

UPDATE 11-AUG-2011: The driver pages seems to have been moved.

Download

Go to: http://cweb.canon.jp/drv-upd/lasershot/captu-intelmac.html. This is a driver download page by Canon. It's mostly in Japanese, but don't worry. Just scroll down to see a box named Canon Advanced Printing Technology, and click on the link that says "CAPT プリンタドライバ & ユーティリティー for Macintosh V3.05." And wait a bit until you finish the download.

Install

Open the .dmg file that you have downloaded and open it. Go to Mac CAPT Printer Driver -> MacOSX -> CAPT Installer.app and open it. It'll need your administrator password and require you to close other applications until the job is done. It's in Japanese but not so difficult, so you should be able to manage your way through.

Setup

  • Reboot your Mac (this may not be necessary but do it anyway).
  • Connect your LBP3000 by USB.
  • Go to your Print & Fax pane in System Preferences.app.
  • Click on the "+" button on the left hand side to add a new printer and open the Add Printer window.

  • DO NOT CLICK the 'Canon LBP3000' that is in under the 'Printer Name' list but CLICK the 'More Printers...' button.

  • Click on the menu that says 'Canon IP (CUPS CAPT)' and change it to 'Canon USB (CUPS CAPT).' (If it is already in USB then don't change it.)

  • Now choose the 'LBP3000' item under the 'Printer Name' list.
  • Click 'Add' button.
  • Voilà!
